The employment opportunities available in Canada are categorised under the National Occupation classification Code (NOC). A Work Permit holder will be eligible to apply for different types of immigration programs which leads to Canadian Permanent Residency.

Temporary Foreign Worker Program-

In the event of scarce local skilled workforce, TFWP makes it possible for Canadian companies to hire employees from outside Canada temporarily. The candidate needs to have a Canadian Job offer prior to applying for the Work Permit. The employer will need an LMIA to hire the Temporary Worker. There are special work permits for certain workers which includes caregivers, Agricultural Workers and business people. A Temporary Foreign Work experience increases the chances of obtaining a canadian PR under certain programs like Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Program, Care given Program etc.

International Mobility program-

Under this program, Canadian employers can hire a foreign worker without an LMIA. They are also eligible for expedited processing of their work permit through Global Skill Strategy, provided their NOC skill level is 'A' or 'O'. The international mobility program lets the employer to hire a temporary foreign worker without an LMIA if you are from a Visa exempt country. if the Temporary Worker has an open work permit, it allows the permit holder to work for any Canadian employer.

Global Talent Stream-

This program is meant to hire highly skilled global talent. The employers can expedite their hiring through this program. This category allows certain highly-skilled foreign nationals to obtain super fast PR processing if they match the parameters setup by competing authorities. Canadian firms have the right to recruit foreign talent through this program, when there are no employees available to hire locally. it is designed to help Canadian companies to recruit highly specialised global talent which contribute to economic growth.

Global Skill Strategy

This program enables foreign nationals to be eligible to process their work permit within a short duration. This category supports fast processing of visa for short term visits involving researches, and certain highly skilled professions. Under this program, workers are exempt for LMIA. Workers qualify for two week processing of their work permit. Their job should be either under the Skill type 'O' or 'A' of the National Occupation Classification.

Foreign Academics

Foreign nationals hired at post secondary institutions for research positions without a work permit or an LMIA. Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, universities and colleges in Canada can hire certain types of foreign academics without requiring LMIA or a work permit. The positions include academic consultants and examiners, graduate assistants, self funded researchers. Foreign workers who need an IRCC work permit but do not require an LMIA includes Post doctoral fellows, research award recipients, visiting professors, guest lecturers etc.

Foreign Agricultural Workers

This is meant for the employers, who wish to hire temporary foreign workers for specific positions in Agricultural sector.A temporary agricultural foreign worker can be hired under the following streams - 

Seasonal Agriculture Worker Program,  Agricultural Stream, Stream for high and low wage positions.

Temporary foreign Worker Program for Quebec 

Quebec has its own process of hiring foreign workers. The hiring includes LMIA exception as well as Facilitated LMIA.

International Agreements

This category is meant for employees who are citizens of US and Mexico. This is an LMIA exempted category. The applicant must be qualified under NAFTA professional occupations and should have an employment offer.

Federal skilled worker

At least 12 months of continuous full-time skilled work experience completed within the previous 10 years or an equal amount in past experience. Skilled work experience for  classifications under NOC skill level '0', 'A' or 'B'. The NOC assigns a code, referred to as NOC code For every single occupation. Your work experience should match with the selected NOC code.

Canadian immigration programs usually refer to occupations as being high skilled or low skilled. This refers to the skill level of the NOC code assigned to the occupation. NOC-skill types

The NOC skill type identifies the industry of the occupation. There are 10 skill types in the NOC metrics.

0 - Management occupations

1-business, finance and administration occupations

2-natural and applied sciences and related occupations

3-health occupations

4-occupations in education, law and social, community and government services

5-occupations in art, culture, recreation and sports.

6-Sales and service occupations

 

Self-employed option

The self-employed immigration program is designed for individuals, who has previous self-employment experience as farmers, athletes or art professionals who had been recognized at international level. If you have previous experience and if you have plans to purchase and manage your business in Canada you may qualify to apply for immigration to Canada under the self-employed category. You must have at least two years of relevant experience and show that you intend to become self-employed in Canada.
