Spouse or Common law partnership

A Permanent Resident can sponsor his/ her spouse or common law partner. The process usually takes 12 months.

once approved the spouse will also qualify for an open work permit.

Dependant Child Sponsorship

A biological or Adopted child can be sponsored by a Permanent Resident parent of Canada.

The child should be under the age of 22 and unmarried to qualify under this category.

Parent/ Grand Parent Sponsorship

A Canadian Permanent Resident who is able to prove their financial ability to support Parents or Grand Parents can 

sponsor to bring them to Canada. A super-visa can be applied for eligible cases, which support multiple entry for extended periods under this category.

Canada immigration categories

The most popular streams of immigration for permanent residence in Canada are -

Express Entry Program, Federal Economic Program, Provincial Nomination, Family Sponsorship, Business and Investment, Quebec Skilled Worker Program, In-home Caregiver Program, Humanitarian and Compassionate  Category.

National Occupation Classification (NOC)

The NOC assigns a code, referred to as NOC code for every single occupation.

International Experience Class (IEC)

This category provides you with the opportunity to travel and work in Canada. Some countries will have an existing agreement with Canada which allows their citizens to apply for IEC work permit. But the applicant should also meet all the eligibility criteria set by the Canadian government.

Express Entry Program is an online application process which involves both federal and provincial governments. It includes - Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Federal skilled Trades (FST), Canadian Experience Class (CEC).The selection is based on nationality, age, language ability, education, work experience and job offer. Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from the express entry pool through the PNP program. The score calculated would be based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

Federal Skilled Worker-

Requires at least 12 months of continuous full-time skilled work experience completed within the previous 10 years.  This program also has minimum requirements on language ability, age, job offer and education credentials as well. The eligibility is assessed based on  a 100 point grading system.

Federal Skilled Trade Program

This category is meant for skilled workers who wants to become Permanent Residents of Canada based on their skilled trade. Minimum requirement includes language ability and two years of full time work experience within the last five years. This Skilled Trade should be listed under the National Occupation Classification. There is no education requirement for the Federal Skilled Trade program.

Canadian Experience Class

This category is meant for the skilled workers who has Canadian work experience and wants to become Permanent Residents. Minimum requirements include required language levels, one year of skilled work experience, in the last three years before you apply. The work experience must be full-time or an equal amount in part-time. You are eligible for additional points if you went to school in Canada or in a foreign country.

Provincial Nomination Program

This program is based on the  requirements of various participating provinces. Provinces and Territories select applicants under this category for Permanent Residence applications.  This gives an opportunity for the applicant to select and settle in a province of their preference. This program is for workers who have the skills, education and work experience to contribute to the economy of a specific province where they want to live as a Permanent Resident.  Each province has its own immigration program that targets certain groups and requirements like students, business people, skilled workers and semi skilled workers.

Family sponsorship

Once you are a Permanent Resident or citizen, you can sponsor your immediate family members like spouse/common-law partner/parent/grandparent/dependent children/siblings/ orphaned children/nephews and nieces for a PR in Canada. if you are a Canadian PR or a citizen and at least 18 years of age, you can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada. Once they become Permanent Resident of Canada, they can study, work and live permanently in Canada. if you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a PR, you must support your relative financially when they arrive.
